Highlights, for Children

Yesterday, pointdev received his latest issue of The Anime Animal Coloring Book and immediately sent over his favorite picture from the book, telling me "he drew it".

Sure ya, did pointdev, sure ya did.

After a few hours of silence, I received another image from pointdev, this time telling me he colored it, but that he wasn't done yet.

I think he got his friend Kwan from school to color this... Kwan's all the time drawing Final Fantasy characters I don't know the name of...

According to everything I know, pointdev is a bit of a pyromaniac, so the colors that are used the most from his crayon box are red, yellow, and orange.

Everything he colors is on fire. I think he's in counseling for it.

In other news, we'd also like to welcome Tobin "mistakendestiny" Kusuma to Team Quietas.

He set up a deviantart page with all this art he pilfered from other artists... we believed him 'cause we're desperate.

As Team Quietas revs up production for Task 2, oxygencult finally returned from his vacation to China, and all he brought for the rest of the team was this lousy stone lion...

While we're not quite sure what the future holds in terms of Milestones, restrictions, etc., we're still soldiering ahead on art and design. No reason to sit on our laurels, and better to be prepared.

On that note, pointdev has been slaving on his day off laying in a hammock and drinking lemonade.

While he was doing that, the gnomes in his computer decided to create these fabulous pieces of artwork to show off a modular armor idea, and the fact that they have mastered layers:

Just as a quick introductory post, we'll be keeping this updated constantly with our progress towards each milestone. It's a bit easier to keep organized than a long forum post about our team. :)

The Concept

Setting: Fantasy world where technology, magic and spirituality co-exist. There are four continents on the world map, each continent is governed by a ruling House, these Houses vie for total control of the globe by staging a series of quest based races.

Visual Style: World of Warcraft meets Jak and Daxter, a generally warm, inviting and colorful world, with the four continents taking their visual and cultural cues from four of our own real world cultures, European/Medival, Middle Eastern/Persian, Native American and Japanese.

The Four Houses

The House Copernicus (Visual influence: Middle Eastern/Persian)
Visual Style: Major influences include the pursuit of science and technology in the pursuit of victory and the advancement of their culture. A proud people, their architecture and culture carries a flavor with it that is decidedly Persian in nature, form and function. Beautiful sand swept lands, peppered with tall spires and beautiful windowed arches with doorways laced with the most intricate golden script and design. The land is washed in rich earthy browns, glowing gold and flowing deep, scarlet highlights from robes, curtains and intricate cloth-work flapping in the breeze from balconies and outside in the dusty city streets.

Philosophy: Dedicated to the advancement of their culture through endeavors in scientific and technological fields, members of The House of Copernicus build exoskeletons and mechanical enhancements for their steeds and to power those riders who chose to go into races without the aid of a beast. These enhancements can offer a variety of advantages during a race, such as enhanced speed, stamina and agility.

The House of Gaia (Visual influence: European Medieval)
Visual Style: While members of The House of Gaia can be found dwelling among the trees or under the mountains, the most condensed group live in a citadel high atop a primordial tortoise-like creature. Carved in ages past by Gaia herself, this creature is a gift to the House for their faith and loyalty to the land. This roving fortress resembles a European castle perched high on a hill; it has multi-layered steppes that house every type of plant The House has come into contact with. The unlimited variations of greens from these plants mixed with the subtle oranges of the rock and clay give the mound a warm, sleepy glow that soothes even the most savage beast and beckons all care-worn travelers.

Philosophy: Those that rally under The House of Gaia believe that the earth grows them and not vice versa. They don’t care for the skies, preferring to keep their feet close to the ground. They likewise take little stock in things they can’t see or touch. Indeed, it’s a miracle that they put any faith in Gaia! In their competitions the members of this House use abilities that slow or bind their opponents, and oftentimes they can be seen riding atop trees or creatures of stone.

The House of the Body and Spirit (Visual influence: Japanese)
Visual Style: Those of the Body and Spirit reside on a continent blessed with the most beautiful seasonal changes on Quietas. Sunkissed trees and flowers of every hue imaginable pepper the landscape, adding natural accent to a rich culture which, at least visually calls to mind that of feudal Japan of earth. Cities are clean and neat, arranged carefully and with much emphasis placed on building with wood, paper and ceramics, and inviting outside spaces inside as well.

Philosophy: The House of the Body and Spirit prides itself on carefully breeding the most physically capable Quietans on the planet. Their motto, "The race resides within, not without", embodies their belief that with strict and proper training, the human body is the most capable of machines, and as such, they shun even the thought of riding a mount into race. Those of the Body and Spirit draw their remarkable strength and ability from close relationships with powerful spirit familiars.

The House of the Dark Order (Visual influence: Native American)
Visual Style: The Members of The House of the Dark Order study the arcane on shelves of earth which are essentially sprawling caves stacked on top of one another. Here they are able to practice magic in a myriad of ways, either in the sky overlooking the rugged land or in the dark Depths. Reminiscent of various Native American tribes, staircases and patron totems rise and descend everywhere you turn. Colorful patterns depicting gods and incantations are painted on the walls, and complex tapestries illustrating creatures of every plane flap in the breeze. The land is harsh and unforgiving and if it weren’t for the conveniences of magic not even the stoutest members could survive for very long.

Philosophy: The use of the Arcane allows the Order to breed either physical or ethereal mounts. Both types of beings are sent to other planes for feeding and training, and summoned back to Quietas at need. The Dark Order uses very aggressive and offensive magic upon their opponents despite being aware of the drawbacks. However, they feel that the mutations and ‘fading’ are a small price to pay for higher power.
